VMSAcademy

Vessel Monitoring Systems Academy courses will commence April 2008

About VMSAcademy

VMSAcademy is the only independent, university-based centre dedicated to training and education on Vessel Monitoring Systems. It's first centre was started in Australia and runs in conjunction with the Australian National Centre for Ocean Resources and Security (ANCORS).

The second centre is located at the Joint Services Command and Staff College (JSCSC), a component of the Defence Academy of the UK. The JSCSC provides world class Command and Staff education and training, in order to enhance Operational Capability, thereby advancing the Defence and Security interests of the United Kingdom. The location of the VMSAcademy at the Defence Academy will have significant benefits for both those attending the first course in September 2008 and other interested parties in the defence sector.

A third Centre in the Middle East will be announced shortly.

Academic Program

VMSAcademy offer specialist professional short courses in Vessel Monitoring Systems (VMS), technology, policy and law. The principle lecturers for the courses are drawn from a range of specialist Visiting Fellows, as well as a number of other guest lecturers from relevant Government departments and agencies.

The course will link fisheries management objectives (and importantly why we do what we do to manage the stocks) with the broader MCS tools available and then hone in on what it is that VMS specifically offers to management agencies and when it can be of most use. The courses mix theory with hands on workshops covering wider Monitoring Control and Surveillance techniques, Satellite Communication principles, tracking devices and their functions, maritime security law, evasive techniques used by skippers, and court & case preparation.
